Let’s admit it. We do enjoy retail therapy every now and then. We love to look good and the transformative power of clothing is beyond belief. However, has it ever occurred to you that your favourite fashion statement in the wardrobe comes at a cost to the environment?
The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of annual global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. At this pace, the fashion industry’s greenhouse gas emissions will surge more than 50% by 2030, according to figures from the United Nations Environment Programme.
The environmental issue caused by the textile industries is immense. Pollutions created in garment making include air, water, noise and even soil. The fashion industry has long been aware of this and zealously come up with solutions to tackle the issue in order to remain competitive in the market. After all, a lot more consumers are becoming conscious over time to keep their environmental impact low.
Such an awakening call becomes a driving force for sustainable innovation. Turning waste into value is key to the textile recycling process which recovers fiber, yarn or fabric and reprocesses the material into useful products.
The good news is that the technological breakthroughs push the boundary, and gave birth to more innovative textile waste upcycling solutions. Swedish company Renewcell is one of the trailblazers developing cutting-edge technologies for recycling textile waste.

As one of Fabrica’s exited investment portfolios, Renewcell turned used cotton and other cellulosic fibers into reusable material. Textile wastes such as worn-out jeans and cotton waste will be processed into Circulose®, a dissolving pulp product with the same look and feel as virgin cotton. By using Circulose®, no lands are needed to grow cotton. In comparison to cotton production, it reduces the water involved by 96% and causes 0 microplastic emissions per wash compared to polyester.
Other innovations in textile waste recycling derived from Circ and Huue, also Fabrica’s proud investments, help the industry advance in eco-friendly production. The former is on a mission to power the clean closet with technology that (re)sources nature’s raw ingredients from global textile waste, promoting a truly circular ecosystem for the fashion industry; the latter uses biotechnology to create more sustainable dyes for the industries that are shaping the world – their first mission: indigo for denim makers.
Next time when you need retail therapy, there are more options to help you make your decision more sustainably.
