QKgoats is formed by three local artisans who are devoted to porcelain painting. Like other artisans, they hope to continue the legacy of Guangcai porcelains in Hong Kong while leaving their marks by injecting contemporary elements into their works to make them different.
In one of Chowsiumou’s works, she added the characters of her comic series “Soya Source Girl” onto some old porcelain tableware, creating a new context within the traditional setting. With “willow pattern”, a chinoiserie pattern used in ceramic tableware as the background in Oychir’s “Alice in Yum Cha Land” series, the work depicts the different tea cultures between East and West where characters of “Alice in Wonderland” are doing all sorts of Chinese cultural activities.
Sapsaam’s “Full of Joy” series reveals the translucent colours and dimensional characteristics of Guangcai porcelains. The pink and purple colours in her work are in fact made of gold. The dynamic vibe comes from the smiles painted on the edge of the plate.
The works of QKgoats best demonstrated the development of Guangcai in Hong Kong since the 20th century. As it has become popular again in recent years, Guangcai is listed as one of the Intangible Cultural Heritages of Hong Kong in 2014. From Guangcai to “Kongcai”, this art form has developed its distinctive style with local elements, telling the stories of Hong Kong.
