The environmental impact caused by the fashion industry is immense. The current fast fashion system accelerates the textiles waste issue where high volumes of non-renewable resources are being used. At the same time, the garment industry is responsible for 20% of global water pollution due to dyeing and finishing, according to a report by earth.org.
According to the Environmental Protection Department, more than 340 tonnes of discarded clothes and textiles are landfilled daily. It is also estimated that four in 10 Hong Kong people have thrown away clothes after having only worn them once.
What are the best solutions for clothes recycling?
Donate – NGOs and local charities that provide services for unwanted clothes donation are not short of in Hong Kong. Collection points are located almost everywhere to make it easy and convenient for people to drop off their unwanted clothes.
Purchase second-hand clothes – This means that no additional energy and resource will be used to create new clothes as they went into creating the goods that have already been used.
Upcycling – Some business have already started to ride on advanced technology to upcycle unwanted and non-recyclable clothes. One such is Renewcell from Sweden which dissolves used cotton and other natural fibres into biodegradable pulp. Such pulp will then be turned into textile fibre.
